Chapter One: Summary Empty Chapter One: Summary

This forum is a summary of Chapter One, a very watered down version of the story. This makes it easier to keep track of what's going on, and should help stop loopholes and loose ends being created (for example - most of us have forgotten that before the train crashed, it was on the way to Tajemnica... where an ex-theif taker's funeral was taking place!). Tiny bits of information that get lost as other entries are added will also be posted here.

So - here y'are! Very Happy

- - - - - - -

- Jarvis is on the way to an ex-theif taker's funeral in Tajemnica ('ex' because he had become a threat to the team), when the train is stopped unexpectedly.

- Meanwhile, a dying wolf is mysteriously rescued from an avalanche...

- ...and Zaranda meets Mister Oswald, a man who is unusually interested in her dart throwing skills. After refusing his offer to go on a 'dart throwing tour of sorts' with him, she realises she is being followed by two men in black and grey suits. Instead of fighting, she runs and hides under a pile of leaves.

- Back with Jarvais, a sudden explosion from the head of the train causes chaos. After finding out it'd come from a first class carriage, he notices a boy being carried away from the crumpled wreckage.

- Meanwhile, we find out Ralkin was the one who saved the wolf.

- Zaranda escapes the uniformed men and flees to the inn she is staying in, called The Dove (in Rennsheim); but Mr. Oswald follows and traps her in her room. We find out that she is a Singular at this point.

- Aran appears, and we find out he was in the same train as Jarvais. The pair ready for battle.

- We meet Candlestein, an inventor in a less-than-stable mental condition. He manages to get his EC-96A - a 3-metre high robot-vehicle - off the train, which inadverdently gives an exposed Jarvais cover (who stuns two of the attackers). We then discover that Candlestein is a friend of Jarvais'.

- Back with the trapped Zaranda, Mr. Oswald reveals his motives: he needs to build the Oswald clan's army, and wants her to join. After questioning him, she also learns that he owns The Dove (which is how he knew which room she was staying in). She refuses his invitation, but Mr. Oswald - after discovering she is a Singular - leaves her with an interesting bit of information that begins to tempt her desire for knowledge...

- We discover that the boy being kidnapped from the train is Cassius, Damaris Heayton's official body double. Cassius is on the verge of a very important revelation - something to do with the signing of a document - when Jarvis' invention intervenes with his thoughts.

- Jarvis binds the remaining kidnappers with a new invention (which acts as an impossibly strong spider web), and Aran kills them... before getting caught in the spider web too.

- Jarvis frees the boy (who has concussion) and fixes Candlestein's robot in minutes. The pair swap favours; Candlestein is to take Jarvais, Aran, Cassius and three more injured people to Tajemnica, and in return Jarvais gives him 50 gold pieces. However, Candlestein breaks his end of the deal - piloting them away from Tajemnica because of a Draugar patrol - and the Theif Takers discover that the EC-96A is an illegal vehicle. Infuriated, Aran grabs the controls and Jarvais pins Candlestein's arms so he can do nothing else - and the pair allow the Draugar patrol to close in...

- A drunk man called Hawman is caught by Ralkin with his pants down. We also find out that Ralkin has a wife, called Mayla.

- Zaranda goes on a knowledge quest, finding out as much about the Oswald clan as possible. We glean this information from her: the Oswald clan is one of the elites, exiled from Archen after being uprooted by the other six clans during the Minor Uprising. They were exiled because they kept claiming the same lands as the Mullhollands, and this ended up generating extreme hatred between the two. (We're unsure if the Mullhollands were exiled too, however). It's also discovered that one of the leaders of the Oswald clan had power over water, and flaunted this power excessively. While thinking over all this information and wondering why it was her Mr. Oswald needed, she makes friends with a caterpillar - who is subsequently killed by a bird. In a fit of rage, Zaranda sends the bird crashing into a nearby tree trunk.

- Even though Jarvais works out that Candlestein has actually stolen the EC-96A, Cassius uses the Heayton Seal to get them through the patrol. Everyone suddenly realises the full extent of Damaris Heayton's power in society.

Yes...very good idea, Mnes. It's especially helpful since we have so many different things flying around at once. It should be a little easier to keep track of everything once we get the characters together. Of course, there will be separate storylines again after that, I would imagine.

One other note...I believe Hawman's wife is Mayla.

The way I read it, Mayla is Ralkin's wife, not Hawman's. Maybe we should ask Spikey...

Chapter 1 loose ends:

What's with the agreement that Oswald and Cassius were trying to work out (well, more like Oswald wants to and Cassius seems to be going along with it)

What's going on with Candlestein and the weird smoke/dark thing that shows up next to him while in the vehicle?

How will Savv attempt to get Damaris into the thief-takers and how would this even work?

What about Ralkin? really...anything. We don't know what the heck he is doing. Complete unknown there.

Why is Jarvis mumbling "MRD" that was found on the robots foot?

What good does it do to find out who paid for the funeral?

Where is Creo?

Are we almost to Chapter 2 yet?
